Whats the word on this kid? Is he going to start the season out of the bullpen, replace Keith Foulke or be Boston's fifth starter?
Is he worth a late round flyer, free-agent pick up or put him on the short list for mid-season free agent pick up? |

This is a question I've been asking myself since out Mr. Fantasy draft. The kid is supposed to have some kind of future, and it's projected as a starter, but his role this year is up in the air.
As you know, I don't need another starter. And I know you don't need another RP.

From today's fanball.com:
quote: Red Sox' Fifth Starter The spot is David Wells' to lose, but there are still no assurances that Boomer will be completely healthy after offseason knee surgery. Meanwhile, Jonathan Papelbon twirled five innings of shutout ball on Friday to thrust himself back into the picture. Wells has already been grousing about rumors his rotation spot might be skipped over early this season since the Red Sox have several off-days, and, quite frankly, it seems the team would be better of dealing the portly portsider. Until that happens, however, Wells is the fifth man in this rotation while Papelbon and Bronson Arroyo waste their talent in the bullpen. Prediction: Wells

It sounds like Papelbon is a worth a flyer and could be valuable in a month or two.[;)] |

quote: SKINNY: Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he'll define Papelbon's role for the upcoming season this coming week, the Boston Globe reports.
SPIN: The Red Sox still have seven starters and are willing to listen to offers for Matt Clement, Bronson Arroyo and David Wells. Papelbon's role in 2006 hinges on those trade talks. "We'll sit down this week," Francona said of deciding Papelbon's role. "We're getting to the point where we need to sit down as a staff. We have some ideas what we want to do."
This is what I found on Papelbon |

Oh yeah, wish we had one more. I do like the flexibility that the roster size has to offer but I also like player movement in the league. My concern was there would be 1 or 2 real strong teams that would hoard players, which I don't think is the case. |

| I wish they would stop jimmyjacking around and make Papelbon the closer already. I never know when Keith Foulke is going to pitch and he suckblows as it is. I want to cut him loose to pick up another SP and right now I'm trying to obtain Noah Lowry off waivers because someone foolishly cut bait on him since he landed on the DL. I am Giants fan and I've always had Noah Lowry on one of my teams if not all of them every year because he always dominates in August and September. [8D] |

Papelbon has closed out 2-1 BOS victories twice now. I saw him play in TEX and he looked good. Foulke, on the other hand, did not.

| Yeah Papelbon is the man in all likelihood and I'm praying that I can get Lowry off waivers because he's the last of the decent waiver starters for now. Only problem is I used my number 1 waiver priority after the draft so I stand at 10 now and will probably lose out to some of the giants fans in my league or to people who know Lowry is a bona fide stud for a number 3 pitcher. | Lowry would be a good pickup. Just some unsolicited advice for next year...if you draft well, you should not need to use your waiver to pick up a free agent right after the draft. Let others blow their waiver priority, moving you higher in priority, and save your priority for the inevitable waiver picks that happen when studs start out slow and inexperienced players drop them. Then also save your waiver priority throughout the year for the end of the season, when people also occasionally drop studs they "don't need" when they've used up all their games at a given position. |

| How does Papelbon's move to the closer's role affect the future of Craig Hansen, the Red Sox first-round pick and closer of the future? Will Papelbon go to the rotation when Hansen is ready? |
