Mr. Fantasy Week 2 Freebie: More to waivers than just Big Three

By Mr. Fantasy

The most important visit to the waiver wire occurs this week. Brandon Jackson was sure to be the most coveted player.

If you landed him - or perhaps Mark Clayton or Michael Vick - your team just became a bit stronger.

And if you didn't ... well, there's no reason to panic.

We learned SO much in Week 1, many more than just three players who could help your team were uncovered. And it's quite possible all or most of these guys slipped past those who rushed to get the Big Three on waivers.

Here are a dozen more guys worth considering if they remain available in your league:

  1. Derek Anderson, Cardinals. For all the talk about the Cardinals being more of a passing team this season, Anderson debuted with nice numbers. With Steve Breaston stepping smoothly into Anquan Boldin's old spot, the potential for continued good passing numbers exists.

  2. Peyton Hillis, Browns. He's a nice second option if you didn't get Jackson. Hillis started ahead of Jerome Harrison in the opener, and he took advantage. He's got a nose for the end zone, which makes him a nice asset in the fantasy game.

  3. Fred Taylor, Patriots. It's now clear Taylor is the Patriots' primary back, especially now that Laurence Maroney has been shipped off to Denver. So even though he's not nearly what he used to be, the opportunity exists for Taylor to post fantasy-worthy numbers.

  4. Steve Slaton, Texans. I realize he was probably drafted in your league. But was he dropped this week after Arian Foster clearly established himself as the man in Houston? If so, Slaton would be worth picking up. He's clearly No. 2 behind Foster, who has a history of getting hurt.

  5. Hakeem Nicks, Giants. We all knew Steve Smith would be Eli Manning's favorite target this season. The question was: Would Hakeem Nicks pick up where he left off last season, or would Mario Manningham regain his fantasy-friendly status? We now know the answer. Grab Nicks is you can.

  6. Brandon Tate, Patriots. The Pats have been looking for a quality third wideout for years. They've erred in trying to resurrect fossils in recent year. Now they've turned to the talented Tate, whose return ability makes him even more valuable in leagues that reward those yards.

  7. Brandon Lloyd, Broncos. It appears the Broncos are going to throw the ball more this season, and Lloyd is the kind of guy who tends to catch 4-5 passes a game when given the opportunity. He's got that opportunity now.

  8. Mike Thomas, Jaguars. Last year Mike Sims-Walker burst onto the scene as a surprise wideout for the Jags. This year's version is Thomas. In fact, it appears he's already surpassed Sims-Walker in the fantasy ratings.

  9. Devin Aromashodu, Bears. We anxiously awaited the Bear opener to see the wideouts sort themselves out. The result: Aromashodu and Johnny Knox stepped forward, while Devin Hester took a huge step backward. Given the number of passes the Bears are going to be throwing this season. Aromashodu would be a wise pick-up.

  10. Nate Washington, Titans. The more Vince Young is allowed to scramble before throwing - like he did so well in college - the more Washington is going to be able to sneak behind defenses and corral long touchdown passes. His first came against a pretty good Raider defense last week. It won't be his last.

  11. Tony Scheffler, Lions. I gave you a heads-up on him last week. If it took a strong performance in the opener to believe me, well, now you have it. He's going to get a lot of balls thrown his way as the Lions, as they did in Week 1, fall behind.

  12. Neal Rackers, Texans. The veteran quietly changed teams in the offseason, but there was nothing quiet about his performance in the opener. He has landed on another high-scoring team, which makes him as valuable as when he was on the Cardinals.
