By Mr. Fantasy
For every fan who would love to fast-forward through the preseason, there's a fantasy competitor who recognizes there are many gems awaiting to be uncovered in the six weeks leading up to the regular season.
As the NFL's 32 teams marched into training camp, each had at least one significant question that figures to impact the fantasy season. Here's the grand tour:
Bears. Will they give rookie Matt Forte a chance to be their starting back? Clearly, Adrian Peterson (Chicago's version) is not the answer.
Bengals. Is the club ready to replace Rudi Johnson with a healthy Chris Perry? And if not, how much will Perry and/or Kenny Watson cut into Johnson's touches? The former star enters camp without a fantasy starting spot assured.
Broncos. Who will be the last man standing among Selvin Young, Andre Hall, Michael Pittman and Ryan Torain, and will Mike Shanahan give him a chance to be a star? The coach has spun straw into gold in the past. Also, who will get the mile-high kicking gig: Garrett Hartley or Matt Prater?
Bills. Will rookie James Hardy break camp as Lee Evans' sidekick at starting wide receiver? If so, maybe Trent Edwards warrants a fantasy backup role this season.
Browns. Will the Donte Stallworth of old show up in Cleveland this season? And if so, what role will he have in a high-powered offense? A productice Stallworth would assure Derek Anderson a Top 10 drafting among quarterbacks.
Buccaneers. How will they split the work among Cadillac Williams, Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn? Speaking of which, what kind of shape is Williams in? And does Ben Troupe still have what it takes to earn playing time ahead of his competition (Alex Smith and Jerramy Stevens) at tight end?
Cardinals. How committed are they to Matt Leinart as their starting quarterback? If he's unleashed to the point Kurt Warner was last season, you could be looking at a fantasy starter here.
Chargers. Who will be LaDainian Tomlinson's backup? Don't forget to book-end the LT selection. And is Craig Davis ready to carve a niche among an impressive group of receivers?
Chiefs. How much does Larry Johnson have left, and will the team continue to use him as a 20-carries-a-game workhorse? A positive review in August could lead to a second-round fantasy selection. Also, who will emerge in battles at quarterback (Brodie Croyle or Damon Huard) and kicker (several candidates including comebacker Justin Medlock)?
Colts. What's the deal with Marvin Harrison? Is he looking at jail time? An NFL suspension? Retirement? Or just another season catching 80 or so balls? Harrison's presence (or lack thereof) dramatically affects the status of potential fantasy sleeper Anthony Gonzalez.
Cowboys. Despite the first-round selection of Felix Jones, are the Cowboys ready to give Marion Barber 20 carries a game? If so, he's a top-five back.
Dolphins. How healthy is Ronnie Brown, and will Ricky Williams cut into his touches? Brown was surprisingly good last season before the injury and before Williams' reinstatement. Also, can the chosen starter between Josh McCown, John Beck and Chad Henne possibly be fantasy-worthy? And is Ted Ginn ready to break out this season?
Eagles. Will DeSean Jackson play a significant role in the passing game? The guy was a flat-out stud in college.
Falcons. Will they commit to either Michael Turner or Jerious Norwood as a fulltime back, or will this be another committee thing that kills the fantasy values of both? And is rookie Matt Ryan good enough right from the get-go to bring out the best in up-and-coming Roddy White?
Forgotten. OK, there's no such team as the Forgotten. Nonetheless, several intriguing names currently reside in Nowheresville: Shaun Alexander, Travis Henry and Kevin Jones among them. Where will they land (if anywhere) this season? And what role will these guys play?
49ers. Can Mike Martz turn Alex Smith into a star, or will the passing-game guru decide Shaun Hill or J.T. O'Sullivan is a better man for the job? With Martz's blessing, Smith could be an intriguing fantasy backup. And is Jason Hill a star in waiting among 49er receivers?
Giants. Is Brandon Jacobs an every-down back? He's fantasy starting material if used properly. Also, can Steve Smith displace Amani Toomer? And can Kevin Boss be a fantasy-worthy tight end?
Jaguars. Will Jerry Porter be a difference-maker in their passing game, or will the recent-year disappointment continue down that troublesome path? If he gets hurt in camp, we can start scripting the answer to that question.
Jets. Who's the man: Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens? And does it really matter?
Lions. Now that the team will actually be running the ball again, will Kevin Smith be the primary carrier, or will Tatum Bell wrestle away some of the work? Smith was drafted to have an immediate impact.
Packers. There's no bigger question than this one: What's up with Brett Favre? If he returns to the Packers, everyone's value (except Aaron Rodgers) goes up. If he doesn't ... we'll see what Rodgers can do. And who among Favre's many developed weapons (backs Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson, receivers Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and James Jones) will earn Rodgers' trust first?
Panthers. Can Jonathan Stewart impress enough in the preseason to become the club's primary back by Opening Day? The Panthers have the potential to surprise some people offensively this season.
Patriots. In an offense that features way too much talent, how many balls a game can Jabar Gaffney and David Thomas expect?
Raiders. How quickly will Darren McFadden take over as the face of the offense? A couple of breakaway runs in preseason games would get fantasy owners' attention. And how much has Javon Walker lost? Perhaps better stated, does he have anything left?
Rams. Is Drew Bennett capable of stepping into Isaac Bruce's big shoes? That's why he was signed last year, wasn't it?
Ravens. How long before rookie Joe Flacco takes over at quarterback? And can any Raven quarterback help Demetrius Williams develop into a too-flight receiver?
Redskins. Can either rookie receiver (Devin Thomas or Malcolm Kelly) move into a prominent role? Under Jim Zorn, the Redskins figure to throw more. And what plans, if any, do the Redskins have for tight end Fred Davis?
Saints. Does Deuce McAllister have anything left? Will Pierre Thomas replace him in any capacity, or will Reggie Bush get additional work? Bush appears ready to bust out this season, but not in a three-man arrangement.
Seahawks. Will an every-down back emerge from among Julius Jones, Maurice Morris and T.J. Duckett? If so, a nice fantasy sleeper could be born. And is rookie Brandon Coutu good enough to win the kicking job over Olindo Mare?
Steelers. Will Mewelde Moore and Rashard Mendenhall cut into the playing time of Willie Parker? If so, his status as a first-round back could be in jeopardy.
Texans. Is Matt Schaub still the no-doubt-about-it No. 1 quarterback? He's a high-potential fantasy backup if given the green light by his coach. And how healthy is Ahman Green? Will the Texans work him hard or settle into a rotation that includes Chris Brown and/or Steve Staton?
Titans. Will Chris Henry and/or Chris Johnson take touches away from LenDale White? White could factor into fantasy rotations if given enough work. And even on a team that throws a lot to the tight end, can Alge Crumpler and Bo Scaife coexist?
Vikings. Will someone emerge among Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice to inspire any confidence in drafting any aspect of the Viking passing game? Probably not. Also, what kind of role will Chester Taylor have behind Adrian Peterson?
