Five Tips for Drafting a Tight End

By Mr. Fantasy

  1. If Vernon Davis is available in Round 2, strongly consider him. The argument here is the same as the one I used when suggesting Michael Vick as the No. 1 overall pick: There is more quantity than quality atop the list of backs and wideouts, which means you'll get a greater value taking your quarterback and tight end (especially one as good as Davis) early.

  2. Think tight end earlier than usual. There are four standouts at the position - Davis, Dallas Clark, Antonio Gates and Jermichael Finley. All should be taken in the first four rounds. Most fantasy participants wait until after solidifying their running back and wide receiver slots before taking a tight end. Don't make that mistake this season if one of the Big Four is available.

  3. Take Aaron Hernandez. While teammate Ron Gronkowski was emerging as one of the big surprises in the fantasy game last season, it's interesting to note that Hernandez actually had more catches for more yards. With Welker healthier and occupying linebackers with his underneath routes, Hernandez appears on the verge of very big things this season.

  4. Don't let the name fool you. Many fantasy starters in recent years at the tight end position have gotten old and have been passed on the charts by younger talent. You'd be much better off with the new guy than the old dud. Heath Miller, Chris Cooley, Todd Heap ... no thanks.

  5. Make your backup a guy with a rookie quarterback. Looking for a sleeper at the tight end position? Take one whose quarterback will need to lean heavily on his tight end to avoid the mystery of NFL secondaries. The Panthers' Greg Olsen is primed for his best season.
