- Strongly consider Michael Vick with the No. 1 overall pick. There's no clearcut choice as the top running back, so why not anchor your team with, in essence, a third running back?
- Of the top three quarterbacks are taken and you have a shot at the fourth, take him. There are four standout quarterbacks in 2011: Vick, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. It would behoove you to employ one.
- Don't be the last to draft a quarterback. If the top four QBs rate as A's, the next five are A-minuses. They are: Tony Romo, Matt Schaub, Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger. Being the only team in your league without a top-nine quarterback would be a huge mistake.
- Take Matthew Stafford ahead of Matt Ryan. OK, if you don't follow Tip No. 3, then at least make the right choice when deciding upon the 10th-best quarterback. Ryan is consistently decent, but Stafford has a ton more potential. All he has to do is stay healthy.
- Be bold when drafting a backup. With nine rock-solid fantasy starters at quarterback this season, you can reach for a high-upside guy as your backup because, chances are, you're not going to play him much anyway. One such guy is rookie Cam Newton, who once he starts running in the regular season could post some surprisingly strong numbers.
